A man found dead in a car in Cape Town neighbourhood Stellenberg on Tuesday morning was allegedly one of two robbers who tried to mug a female jogger, and was shot by a passing motorist who witnessed the attack.

According to information received by TygerBurger, the mugging took place at about 07:55 on the corner of Carl Cronje and Frans Conradie Roads in Bellville. Two men jumped out of a white Mazda and tried to rob a female jogger of her fanny pack.

A passing motorist saw the attack and fired shots at the suspects, who jumped back into their car and fled in the direction of Tyger Valley. The same car was then seen speeding along Mispel Road before coming to a stop on the corner of Eversdal Road and Mountain View Drive.

CCTV footage shows the vehicle had been parked on Raglan Street since 06:00, waiting for a target. After being reported by other motorists, medical personnel responding to the scene found the deceased man, estimated to be in his late twenties inside the vehicle with what looked like bullet holes on the side of the car. On the seat next to him was a bottleneck with residue of Mandrax.

Police confirmed the incident. “Durbanville police received a complaint of the stationary vehicle at around 10:30. On arrival at the scene they found a body of a yet to be identified adult male who sustained gunshot wounds,” said Constable Ndakhe Gwala, police media liaison officer.”

“According to reports, the deceased and other suspects who fled were involved in street robberies around Bellville and Durbanville. As they were robbing their second victim, a bystander who had a licensed firearm in his possession opened fire and the suspects drove away. They came to a halt at Eversdal Road and the other suspects fled on foot, leaving the deceased in the vehicle,” he said.

Two counts of robbery have been registered and an inquest docket for further investigation. No arrest has been effected at this stage.
