Traffic Services carried out an illegal street racing operation in Mitchells Plain on Saturday evening.

Officers arrested seven people for drunk driving, three for reckless and negligent driving, and one for displaying a false licence plate. Three vehicles were impounded for taking part in illegal street races.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said it was satisfying to see the by-law changes take effect.

“Retrieving their vehicles is a costly and time-consuming exercise — even more so if it is linked to a criminal matter. Hopefully, this will make those scofflaws think twice in future about breaking the law and endangering the lives of others,” he said.

An impoundment linked only to a by-law offence can be released immediately once a fee of R2 500 has been paid. However, if the vehicle is linked to a police case or criminal court matter, it must remain in the pound until the matter is finalised and a court order authorising the release has been received. The owner must also pay the impoundment release fee.
