Plans are underway to establish a City Improvement District (CID) in Goodwood, aimed at transforming the area into a safer, cleaner, and more inclusive community. While still in the proposal stage, the initiative has already garnered strong support from local stakeholders and residents.
“Currently, the CID is still in the proposal stage and has not yet been officially established. Community participation is now a key component of the initiative, and we are actively encouraging residents and businesses to get involved and share their input,” says Hoosain Abrahams, one of the members of the interim steering committee.
CID
The concept of a CID involves local property owners agreeing to fund supplementary services — such as security, cleaning, and urban management — in addition to those provided by the City of Cape Town. These services are tailored to address the specific needs of the area.
According to Abrahams, the decision to pursue a CID in Goodwood was largely driven by ongoing challenges, including rising crime rates, urban decay, and a need for improved service delivery.
“The aim is to make Goodwood safer, cleaner, and greener, while also uplifting those in need,” he explained. “Our ambition is to reduce crime as far as possible, keep public spaces safe and welcoming, and enhance the overall look and feel of our community.”
The main objectives of the CID include:
- enhancing safety and security;
- maintaining clean and well-kept public spaces;
- providing targeted urban upgrades and maintenance and
- building a strong sense of local pride and community involvement.
Get involved
Abrahams confirmed that several consultative meetings have already taken place with the City of Cape Town, and that the proposal is being carefully refined to reflect community needs.
Local business owners, residents, and municipal representatives have emerged as key partners in driving the initiative forward.
“Community members can get involved by attending public meetings, providing feedback, and supporting the initiative through various channels, such as our WhatsApp discussion group,” said Abrahams. “We are in the process of finalising our website, which will be a central hub for information and updates.”
