Rugby supporters travelling to the match between South Africa’s Springboks and New Zealand’s All Blacks this coming weekend will not have to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic as train services in Cape Town have been made somewhat more convenient.

The test match — The World Greatest Rivalry — takes place at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday 29 August at 17:00.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Western Cape announced that it will operate additional train services for this fixture to carry the thousands of supporters expected at the stadium. A return ticket will cost R20.

Avoid traffic

“The additional services offer supporters a safe, reliable and convenient alternative to private transport, and help them avoid the heavy traffic expected around the Cape Town CBD and Green Point. Rail moves large numbers of spectators efficiently while easing pressure on the roads,” a statement reads.

Prasa will operate additional services on the Northern and Cape Flats Line.

On the Northern Line, the services will operate between 15:00 to 16:00 (inbound) and 20:00 (outbound); and on the Cape Flats Lines (Cape Town to Retreat) between 15:00 and 16:00 (inbound) and between 20:00 and 21:00 (outbound).

Park and ride

Prasa says some stations also offer parking facilities for those who wish to drive to their nearest station and continue the journey by rail on both the Southern and Northern Lines.

Supporters are encouraged to arrive at their departure stations early and to buy return tickets before travelling, Prasa says, adding that this reduces queues and makes for a smoother journey.
