Work on the pathway at Bothasig’s Batavia Street Fynbos Area has finally begun. The work started this week.

Miquette Temlett, ward councillor, shared the news about the progress that is being made.

This first phase of the project will see approximately 400m of pathway constructed at a width of 1,5m, with the pathway covering the majority of the site. Once completed, only 190m will remain for phase 2, bringing the total pathway length to 590m, she said.

The construction of the laterite pathway is funded through the ward allocation, she explained.

TygerBurger previously reported on the rare fynbos area and its future plans. The area is the site where unique fynbos was discovered – including 18 critically endangered species – which is now being protected.

A wooden fence has also been installed, along with signboards containing information about the area. At a previous council meeting, councillors was discussed that benches would also be installed at some stage.

The park was officially opened in October last year.

Temlett said this week that the contractor for the pathway has already started the earthworks, and that the E1 kerbstones had been delivered, marking a significant step forward in improving accessibility and enjoyment to this beautiful natural area.

Visitors and residents are advised to be aware of the heavy machinery operating on site and are asked to exercise caution when moving through, or around the area.

Temlett also thanked the residents and the neighbouring property owners for their patience and understanding. There will be some temporary inconvenience during construction, but the anticipated construction period is only five to six weeks. Judging by the excellent progress already being made, completion may even be sooner than expected, she said.

The Friends of Batavia Street Fynbos Area, who conduct regular clean-ups, indicated that they are extremely excited and grateful for this progress made.
