One killed, two wounded in a delivery-truck hijacking in Kuils River

Three men who hijacked a
delivery truck in Kuils River in broad daylight on Wednesday met their match
thanks to an alert community member and a swift response from traffic patrol.

Liesel Beukes said according to information received three men with firearms
hijacked a delivery truck of Food Lovers’ Market in
Carinus Street, Kuils River, in its parking area on Wednesday 17
January at 11:15.

“The passengers of the delivery
truck were forced into the cab of the truck and the driver was told to drive
towards the R300 highway,”  she related.

A community member saw what was
happening during the truck-jacking and alerted highway traffic patrol, who
pursued them.”

Beukes said the delivery truck came to a stop on the R300 before
the Hindle Road turnoff (direction Mitchell’s Plain).

“The suspects jumped out and
started shooting at the traffic officers, who returned fire.”

Beukes said one of the suspects
was fatally wounded in the shootout. The remaining two were wounded and
arrested.

Both received medical attention
at Tygerberg Hospital and are currently in custody in the holding cells at
Kuils River Police Station.

Beukes said the case was being
investigated by the provincial Investigating Unit for Serious and Violent
Crimes.

The two suspects, aged 29 and
36, will appear in the Blue Downs court on Friday 19 January.
