Construction has begun on the Okavango Road intersection with Amadeus Drive as part of a private developer’s infrastructure contribution to keep pace with rapidly growing congestion in the Kraaifontein and Durbanville areas.
The work, which started last week, will continue until Friday 14 May 2027 if all goes according to plan, says the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas.
Quintas told TygerBurger that the road upgrade is in lieu of development contributions from the Groot Phesantekraal Development and is aimed at accommodating the increase in traffic generated by intensified development across the area.
The development in Durbanville, is a large mixed-use precinct transforming historic farmland into a modern community hub featuring residential and retirement estates, an education, retail and lifestyle hubs.
“This is a fast developing area where congestion is growing,” he said. “We welcome this intersection upgrade along Okavango Road. The improved stormwater drainage here will also reduce the risk of road flooding.”
“Congestion can be expected due to partial lane closures over the next few months; we therefore ask that road users please remain patient and use alternative routes while construction work is under way. We thank you for your understanding while we work on our infrastructure to keep Cape Town moving,” Quintas said.
Residents can look forward to a wider intersection, which will alleviate traffic congestion in the future.
The scope of works includes construction of dual roadways and provision of active mobility infrastructure, upgrading of the stormwater pipe and channel system, conversion of the current open-channel drainage to a formal piped system with kerb inlets connecting into the new stormwater pipe network at the Vatican Street intersection, modification of existing infrastructure affected by the upgrades, relocation and upgrading of intersection signalisation, relocation and re-installation of electrical cables, installation of new streetlights and cables, and reinstatement of all road markings to suit the new alignment.
