The Mitchell’s Plain precinct has had no murders for the last 18 days, according to the precinct’s station commander, Brig. Brian Muller.
The count is a significant milestone for the area in light of a recent spate of gang murders plaguing the area, and which claimed seven lives this month.
The provincial Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, commended recent efforts by police in the area to combat gang-related violence.
She said the relative peace in the area was due to a partnership among the police, Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (Leap) officers and the metro police.
“These efforts have significantly reduced gang-related shootings in Mitchell’s Plain and surrounding communities, demonstrating the power of sustained, integrated policing operations. These operations led to the confiscation of more than 50 unlicensed firearms and ammunition during the month of July, a remarkable achievement.”
Marais commended the partnership and community-based structures for “their relentless work, commitment, and bravery in achieving these results.”
“I also wish to thank residents for their continued support for our law-enforcement agencies. Every resident who came forward with information and tip-offs that led directly to the seizure of these illegal firearms made a valuable contribution to saving lives. Continued joint operations and the sharing of intelligence must remain at the core of our crime-fighting strategy.”
