Police are investigating a possible carjacking attempt in Thornton after a man was injured on the motorcycle he was travelling on in Forest Drive extension in on Monday afternoon (3 July).

When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly before 18:00, they found the man lying on the sidewalk surrounded by bystanders and neighbourhood watch members.

According to ER24, upon further assessment, it was found that the man had sustained a broken ankle. He was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital.

Riad Davids, the Ward councillor for Thornton, said he was informed about the incident soon after it happened.

“We called law enforcement as the police were not able to be there immediately. An ambulance was also called, however, there was a delay in them getting there as well,” Davids said.

According to Davids, the Thornton Neighbourhood Watch and many concerned citizens were there to assist.

Provincial police spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk said a case of attempted hijacking was opened. “The victim, a man, was driving his white Big Boy motorcycle when he was suddenly hit by a silver car, a Hyundai Accent. One of the passengers of the car jumped out and took the motorcycle but left it again after the victim was assisted by witnesses,” Van Wyk explained.

Van Wyk stated that the victim is in a stable condition and that no arrests were made yet.
