Monte Vista community mourns dedicated neighbourhood watch member

Darryl Robert Brougham Cook

The family of a member of the Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch says they were overwhelmed by the amount of support and respect paid to their brother.

Members of the neighbourhood watch, along with officials from the police and other private security firms as well as residents in the community took part in a drive-by memorial held in honour of Darryl Robert Brougham Cook (41) who passed away recently as a result of a stroke.

Darryl had served in many community organisations.

Graeme Cook, his brother, told TygerBurger last week that Darryl loved to help others. “I was shocked when I saw the number of people who came out to the memorial event, at all of the people who were there. I could not believe that he was involved in so many organisations and to the degree to which he was involved,” he says. More than 50 people attended the memorial on Thursday last week.

Apart from the neighbourhood watch, Darryl was also employed by ECP Security at the time of his death.

“He had a disability, a slight brain damage and low muscle tone, but he was involved in everything. He even volunteered at the fire department,” says Graeme. Darryl was staying with Graeme and his wife at the time of his death.

The Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch thanked those for taking the time out to sympathise. “We would like to thank all the neighbourhood watch members who attended the memorial service. A special thanks to District Watch, Fidelity ADT, ECP, Goodwood Community Policing Forum, Securemed, Bothasig Community Policing Forum and PWP and Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch for attending,” says Leone Pretorius, secretary.

Friends, family, colleagues and residents paid tribute to Darryl Cook last week. From left are Chris Fish, Barry Clark (PWP), Clayton Irle and Colin Maree, both from the Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch.

The funeral for Darryl will be held this Saturday (7 June) at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Adam Tas Street, Bothasig at 10:00.
