The accident scene on Saturday which claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

A motorcycle accident this past weekend in Vryburger Avenue, Bothasig, claimed the life of one person.

Several emergency services, including the City of Cape Town‘s fire and rescue services, traffic services, law enforcement, disaster risk management, ER24 and Western Cape Government Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responded to the incident, which occurred on Saturday 2 May around 12:30.

Neal de Wit, owner of the private security company Precinct Response, said a call came through regarding a serious motorcycle accident in Bothasig. “One of our response officers was dispatched immediately, arriving within seconds, and quickly relayed the severity of the situation.”

A first responder along with members of the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch responded swiftly. He said first aid was administered on the scene while emergency medical services were en route.

ER24 arrived promptly and took over the patient care, De Wit said.

“Tragically, despite the rapid response and all efforts made by those on the scene, the gentleman succumbed to his injuries. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”

Ineke van Huyssteen, ER24 spokesperson, said its paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 13:00 to find a motorcyclist lying on the centre island of the road. “On further assessment, the patient was found to have sustained serious injuries. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts were immediately initiated, yet despite the best efforts of all involved the patient succumbed to his injuries on scene.”

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not known to the paramedics, she said.

Mario Borchards, Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair, confirmed the incident, as did Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for the City’s Traffic Service, who said traffic officers were dispatched to the scene at 12:33 on Saturday.

He said: “One motorcycle was involved. It appears the 26-year-old rider lost control and collided with a lamppost.” He was declared dead at the scene.

Bothasig police spokesperson WO Sean Ah-Sing, also confirmed the fatal motorcycle accident, adding it was under investigation.
