Faith communities in Kraaifontein are turning to prayer as a weapon against crime, with churches, ministries, and community leaders joining forces for the Scottsdene Tent Crusade in October, an initiative backed by the Kraaifontein Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum as part of a holistic response to the social challenges affecting the area.

The vision took shape at a planning meeting on 17 May, where discussions began around bringing churches and community stakeholders together for a united outreach in the greater Kraaifontein area, and has since gained momentum, with an increasing number of role-players aligning themselves to the goal of positive transformation.

Walk the streets

Several churches, ministries, and stakeholders are playing key roles in planning, mobilisation, and support. Among them are Rooipeper Ministries, with Reverend Glenn Barkhuizen integral to the planning stages, the Kraaifontein Prayer Walk Network, and Word Impact Ministry, alongside various churches, prayer networks, and community stakeholders.

Denver Dreyer, spokesperson for the crusade and vice chairman of the Kraaifontein Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum, said the forum has expressed its full support for the outreach.

“We are in full support of this event because we believe that crime and many of the social challenges affecting our communities require a holistic response,” Dreyer told the newspaper.

“While law enforcement and other community structures have an essential role to play, we also recognise the important contribution of the church and faith communities in bringing hope and healing.”

Dreyer said the forum recognises that crime prevention cannot be addressed through a single approach alone. “As people of faith, we believe there is also a spiritual dimension to many of the challenges we face. The church has a vital role to play through prayer, intercession and community outreach. These efforts can help restore hope, strengthen families and encourage positive choices within our communities.”

He added that the united support behind the crusade demonstrates what can happen when different sectors of the community work together. “This crusade represents more than a series of meetings. It is an opportunity for people to come together, pray together and stand together for the wellbeing and future of our community.”

The Scottsdene Tent Crusade will take place from 5 to 9 October at Scottsdene Secondary School, with evangelist Thurston Meyer ministering each evening from 19:00 to 21:00.
