With the icy cold and rainy winter months lying ahead, a special campaign has started to help protect the most vulnerable and needy.
The Keep Cape Town Warm campaign – a partnership between Good Hope FM, The Community Chest and City of Cape Town – calls on all residents in the city to donate blankets, non-perishable foods and cash to help make the lives of people and those on the streets a bit easier.
The campaign has been running for more than a decade.
In 2025 alone, more than 5 000 non-perishable items, 1 400 blankets and 47 big bags of second-hand clothing were donated, benefiting 41 non-profit organisations across the city, the radio station said.
From Wednesday 22 April to Saturday 20 June, the radio station is urging schools, universities, companies, community groups and individuals to rally together, challenge one another and extend a healing hand to someone in desperate need. As part of the launch of the campaign, the breakfast team of Good Hope FM visited the Parow North Primary School in Theal Street, Parow on Wednesday, where residents were able to show their support.
Donations of blankets and non-perishable foods can be dropped off during the live school broadcasts of the Roger Goode Breakfast Show or alternatively at the SABC Studios in Sea Point. The following schools will be visited for the next two or so months – Sea Point Primary (29 April), Pinelands North Primary (6 May), Sunlands Primary (13 May), York Road Primary (20 May) and Milnerton Primary (27 May).
Cash donations can be done through pay points at these outside live broadcasts or via dedicated donation platforms listed on the radio station’s platforms.
Partnership
“The City is proud to partner with Good Hope FM as part of this year’s Keep Cape Town Warm campaign,” said Priya Reddy, spokesperson for the City, “This strengthens our shared commitment to supporting vulnerable communities during the colder months. Through this collaboration, we can significantly expand our reach, using trusted platforms to educate, mobilise and empower residents to take action. This partnership enables us to connect directly with communities across the metro, ensuring that critical winter-readiness messaging – from flood prevention to humanitarian support – reaches those who need it most, while encouraging a spirit of collective care and responsibility.”
Grateful
Masi Mdingane, business manager of Good Hope FM and 5FM, says the support they get is always overwhelming.
“Every winter, our listeners show us what Cape Town is truly made of compassion, generosity and a massive do-good spirit. This year, in proud partnership with Community Chest and now the City of Cape Town, we are asking everyone to step up once again. If each of us gives just a little, together we can change the winter for thousands of people, who could well have been our brother, sister, child, parent or friend, who would otherwise face the cold alone.”
