Illicit cigarettes worth R22 million confiscated on the N1 in Cape Town, near Joostenbergvlakte

Illicit cigarettes with a street value of R22 million was confiscated and two men arrested when police swooped in on a truck transporting the goods from Johannesburg to Cape Town. 

It was intercepted near the Joostenberg Weighbridge on the N1 in the direction of Cape Town, around 10:30 on Sunday 5 November, in a joint operation by the economic infrastructure task team and the Western Cape extortion task team.

 “After further investigation the large consignment of illicit cigarettes was destined for a warehouse in Montagu Gardens,” said police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk. “Border police and customs verified the illicit goods and two men aged 34 and 62 were arrested and detained at Klapmuts Police Station on charges of possession and the transport of illicit goods.”

They were due to make a court appearance at Paarl Magistrates’ Court once charged, he said.
