Home-based careworkers in Bonteheuwel are reeling after a break-in at their office at Arcadia High School.

A number of essential items were stolen, including kettles, bar fridges, and other equipment that they rely on every day to serve our community.

Angus McKenzie, the local ward councillor, says it is a sad day because these are dedicated workers doing incredible work: “Day after day they walk from street to street and house to house, delivering medication, caring for our elderly residents, and supporting those who are no longer able to care for themselves. Many of our own parents and grandparents depend on their compassion and commitment. When equipment is stolen from them, it is not just the organisation that suffers; it is the elderly and vulnerable residents of Bonteheuwel who are affected,” says McKenzie.

Appeal for information

McKenzie appealed to anyone who has information about this burglary or knows the whereabouts of the stolen items to send him a direct message. “Your identity will be protected, and any information received will be followed up. These crimes are committed by people from somewhere within our communities — they don’t simply appear out of nowhere. If we know who is responsible or where these items are being hidden or sold, we have a responsibility to speak up. Remaining silent only allows those who prey on our community to continue doing so. Let’s stand together and help our home-based carers recover what was taken so they can continue the vital work they do for our elderly residents,” he says.
