All four newly established sector neighbourhood watches in Goodwood have recently officially received their formal accreditation from the Western Cape Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety — a monumental milestone for community safety, the Goodwood Community Policing Forum (CPF) says.

Now recognised as accredited, registered, legal entities, the Townsend Estate, Goodwood Estate, Vasco Estate, and Richmond Estate Neighbourhood Watches operate with the full support and backing of local law enforcement agencies, says Abdallah Sydney, CPF chair.

The four sectors have seen extraordinary growth since their inception, Sydney says, with total membership spiking three-fold with active patrollers.

Abdallah says the impact of these volunteer networks stretches far beyond traditional crime prevention. Patrollers have increasingly taken on social intervention roles, successfully placing multiple vulnerable individuals into safe spaces and old age homes. Members recently expressed their grief over the passing of one such individual who had been placed in a local home, he says. At the same time, they shared deep gratitude that the individual was able to experience a dignified, better quality of life in their final days.

Interventions

Many of these successful interventions involve local drug addicts who indicated a desire for help and voluntarily entered rehabilitation programmes. Because formal funding is often scarce, these life-saving recovery programmes are frequently paid for directly out of the pockets of the patrollers themselves, Abdallah says. These same volunteers spend tireless hours on night patrols, utilising their own personal funds for vehicle fuel and sacrificing precious time with their families until the early hours of the morning to keep local streets secure, he says.

These relentless efforts on the ground have directly resulted in numerous successful arrests and convictions, though the battle against crime remains complex, Abdallah says.

Simultaneously, proactive crime-prevention initiatives are yielding visible results along the commercial heart of Goodwood, says Abdallah.

Following a recent spate of armed robberies, joint walking patrols have been established along the Voortrekker Road corridor. The initiative, sparked by Goodwood Police Station commander Col Shawn van Wyk, brings together neighbourhood watch members and police officers on foot. Together, they walk the corridor to engage directly with local spaza shops, encouraging shop owners to close their gates at 19:00 and completely cease trading by 21:00 for their own safety. We have already seen a positive and immediate impact from the foot patrols along Voortrekker Road, with noticeably less loitering and a reduction in incidents, says Abdallah.

With official provincial accreditation now securing their legal mandate, these four Goodwood neighbourhood watches including the Glenwood Neighbourhood Watch who attained their renewal during this period, are urging more residents to step forward, join their respective watches, and actively participate in securing the community.
