Hard work, commitment, and a determination to make something of herself in life are among the values that ensured a former till packer become the proud branch manager of a pet store.
Rechaider Matloga (32), branch manager of Petshop Science N1 City, was fortunate enough to empower herself at an early stage.
A stepping stone through the Retail Readiness Programme
In 2016, while studying, she heard about the Shoprite Group’s Retail Readiness Programme, a skills development programme designed to equip unemployed youth with the knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in retail. She applied and, after completing it, joined the group as a till packer at Checkers in 2017.
Matloga, originally from Limpopo, took every opportunity to learn as the years went by. She asked questions, took on new responsibilities, and learnt from the people around her.

Leading her own team
Matloga, a mother of three, is now leading her own team and believes good leaders do not just focus on results — they help people develop.
She is already setting her sights on the next step in her career and hopes to lead a larger store.
“You do not have to have everything figured out when you start,” she says. “Retail is a place where you can build a lasting career, and your start is never your end. Every role teaches you something, and if you are willing to learn and keep showing up, you never know where it might take you.”
