The Edgemead Arts and Craft Group has introduced a new edition to its operations – a new Kids’s Arts and Crafts Group.
Heleen Niere, founder, says they are excited about the announcement of this new sister group. This new platform is a fantastic space for parents and guardians to showcase their children’s artistic creations, share fun art activities, and exchange creative ideas online, she says. The group kicked off with a festive “Christmas in July” themed colouring competition, featuring two age groups and prizes for the winners, she says.
The Edgemead Arts and Craft also hosted a Dr Willie Bester Inspired Competition recently, which was won by three of its members. Niere says the competition is one of the group’s most thrilling initiatives.
Bester is globally recognised as one of South Africa’s most significant resistance artists. He powerfully incorporates recycled materials into his paintings, assemblages, and sculptures, creating impactful artworks that speak out against political, social, and economic injustice, Niere explains.
“Members had three months to create an artwork inspired by the renowned South African artist. We were incredibly honoured and grateful that Dr Bester himself agreed to judge the competition. The three talented winners of the competition were Kathy Grant, Lizette Pleass, and Neville Naidoo,” she says.
They received a variety of prizes generously sponsored by members of the group. “The entries were truly amazing, and we believe the experience enriched everyone who participated,” says Heleen.
The Edgemead Arts and Craft Group started as a WhatsApp group, but has blossomed into a vibrant and active community exceeding its initial online presence. The group now hosts engaging activities, exciting competitions, and member meetings.
“It has truly transformed from just a group into a supportive community, with its reach extending well beyond Edgemead to include surrounding areas. We are thrilled to see members willing to travel to participate, and for those who prefer an online experience, there is always something new and inspiring to discover,” says Niere.
There is no cost to join the group. If you reside in the northern suburbs and are interested in becoming part of the community or new Kids Arts and Craft WhatsApp group contact Niere on 083 564 7655.
