Several areas across the province remain without electricity since the severe storm that hit large parts of the Western Cape. It hit the Western Cape from Sunday 10 May until Tuesday 12 May, causing floods in many areas. Many remain inaccessible due to bridges that were swept away. Infrastructure on several farms in the province has also suffered extensive damage.
Eskom confirmed yesterday that some areas are still without electricity. “Our recovery teams remain committed to restore all electricity supply to the remaining customers impacted by the severe weather event,” it said in a statement on Tuesday 26 May.
Stil in the dark
Areas still without electricity are:
- Boland/Cape Winelands (Hexrivier, Badsberg, Chavonnes and Villiersdorp farms);
- Garden Route (Buffelsnek, Harkerville, Gouna, Herbertsdale/Jakkelsvlei, Brackenhill, Fisanthoek, Klein Bavaria, Garden of Eden and Blanco, Riversdale, and Stilbaai farms);
- Overberg/Overstrand (Buffeljagsriver, Hemel en Aarde, Papiesvlei, Spanjaardskloof and Riviersonderend and Stanford farms);
- West Coast (Citrusdal and Noordhoek farms, Du Pont and Algeria).
Restoration efforts
Eskom said restoration efforts across the affected areas in the Western Cape are progressing steadily with significant milestones already achieved. It said engagements with local government have been ongoing to ensure coordinated response efforts, while additional support has been mobilised through collaboration with farmers and other key stakeholders on the ground.
“While electricity supply has been restored to major sections of the network, work continues to repair local infrastructure and address challenges such as extensive vegetation and river crossings. Eskom technical teams remain on-site and committed to restoring full supply as safely and efficiently as possible,” the power supplier said.
It also issued a timeline for the estimated time of restoration for the Boland/Cape Winelands, Garden Route, Overberg/Overstrand and West Coast areas which range from 29 May to 25 July this year.
