Eight matric dances. Eight dreams of an unforgettable evening.

With eight of their 144 young residents in matric this year, Durbanville Children’s Home is faced with a dilemma — finding sponsors for everything from matric dresses and suits to transport and photography to make their evening special.

For most matrics, the journey to their matric dance is filled with shopping trips, most often a tailored dress with fittings, family advice and excited conversations around the dinner table.

Support a Matric Campaign

“Our matriculants may not have that support system, but they do have us. And they have you,” says Johanna Strauss, manager of Durbanville Children’s Home, in introducing the matrics this year in their Support a Matric Campaign.

Among the matrics is 18-year-old Karla Koen, who has been crowned Miss Durbanville 2026 in a model school competition presented by the BREATHE Foundation in February.

“As she prepares to take her final steps through her high school journey, Karla is ready to celebrate this milestone in true pageant style. With dreams of becoming a successful model, she hopes to make a breathtaking entrance.

“She is a cute girl with a sparkling personality — I call her Tinkerbell,” Strauss says.

High standards

Focused, disciplined and driven by excellence, Hendrick* is a young man with his sights firmly set on greatness.

“An academic powerhouse in every sense of the word, Hendrick consistently holds himself to exceptionally high standards and continues to rise above every challenge placed in his path.

“Despite the obstacles he has faced, he remains at the top of his class — proving that resilience and determination are just as important as talent. With dreams of becoming a civil engineer, Hendrick hopes to secure a place at one of South Africa’s leading universities through a bursary or scholarship,” Strauss says.

Big ambitions

“With a sense of humour far beyond his years and the ability to brighten even the toughest days, Kyle* is our resident comedian. But behind the jokes and infectious personality is a young man with big ambitions and an even bigger heart.

“Kyle dreams of owning his own plumbing business one day, building a future defined by hard work, independence and success. More than anything, he hopes to create a life filled with the safety, stability and security that every young person deserves,” Strauss says.

“Graceful, creative and quietly determined, Lene* is a young woman with a world of talent waiting to be shared. She has a gentle spirit and a creative mind, finding inspiration in colours, artwork and the beauty she sees in the world around her. While she may be one of the quieter personalities in the room, there is an undeniable strength and determination beneath the surface.With dreams of becoming a professional hairdresser, Lene hopes to channel her artistic flair into a career where she can help others feel confident and beautiful

“Quietly determined and wise beyond his years, 18-year-old Eon* dreams of breaking the cycles of his childhood and becoming a police officer — bringing respect, justice and positive change to his community. He is a talented football player with a passion for adventure, and his ambitions stretch far beyond South Africa’s borders as he hopes to one day travel the world,” she adds.

Head girl

“As head girl of her school, Zozo* leads with grace, confidence and unwavering determination. She is the rare combination of strength and humility, excelling on the athletics field, thriving in the classroom and stepping up as a leader and protector within her home. At every turn, Zozo sets the standard for excellence, inspiring those around her through both her achievements and her character.

“While her accomplishments speak for themselves, it is her compassion, resilience and natural leadership that truly make her exceptional,” Strauss says.

“Representing resilience, ambition and quiet strength, 19-year-old Cal* is ready to take on the world. As Cal prepares to step into the next chapter of his life, he does so with confidence, purpose and determination. The Children’s Home has played an important role in shaping the young man he has become, providing a foundation from which he has grown into a strong, independent and focused individual.”

Western Province rugby

“Like so many young boys, 19-year-old Rodney* dreams of one day wearing the green and gold and representing the Springboks on the world’s biggest stage. Rodney is already well on his way, aiming to earn his place in the Western Province rugby team – proving that hard work, dedication and belief in yourself can open incredible doors,” Strauss says.

Each matriculant has a wish list of items needed for their special evening: clothes, shoes, accessories, makeup and/or hair styling, contributions towards transport and photography, or the entire matriculant’s experience.

“While our children may not have parents helping them choose dresses, suits and shoes, they are surrounded by a community that believes in them.

“Together, we can ensure that when they step onto that dance floor, they feel celebrated, valued and loved. Whether you sponsor a dress, a pair of shoes or simply share this appeal, every contribution helps make matric magic possible.”
