A Strandfontein training centre is offering free Saturday Computer Applications Technology (CAT) readiness assessments to help matric learners prepare for their final examinations.

Knights Innovation Support Centre, based at 29 Blackberry Mall, says the assessments are designed to help learners identify their knowledge gaps before the final examination period.

Séan Achim, managing director of the centre, said the initiative was a direct response to concerns he hears from parents in the community.

“I am a child of Mitchell’s Plain. I see the struggle every day and parents often come up to me asking if I can help,” said Achim. “This is our response. The assessments are completely free, with no strings attached. We simply want learners to know where they stand, what they already understand and what they should focus on next.”

Who can attend

The assessments are aimed at matric learners taking CAT, but Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners are also welcome where space is available.

Why assessments help

Achim said many learners become overwhelmed because they try to study everything at once.

“Many learners are not anxious because they do not care. They are anxious because they do care, but they do not know where to begin,” he said. “An assessment helps them take stock calmly. Once they know what they know and what still needs attention, the pressure becomes more manageable because there is a plan.”

Community response

The centre recently opened its Saturday assessment process to test the booking system, learning environment and assessment platform. One Grade 11 learner attended with his mother, completed the process and left with access to continue preparing. His mother also took posters to share with local schools.

“Parents should not have to watch their children struggle alone,” said Achim. “Sometimes the most caring thing we can do is help a learner pause, assess their current knowledge honestly and then guide them toward the areas that need focus.”

The free CAT readiness assessments will run every Saturday until the end of August at Knights Innovation Support Centre, 29 Blackberry Mall, Strandfontein.
