Every bottle of perfume Lusanda Meje sells represents far more than a fragrance. It embodies independence, resilience and a dream of creating a better future for her young child. The Delft entrepreneur is proving that disability is no barrier to success after launching her own business with the help of Engen’s New Venture Creation Learnership.
A business takes shape
Originally from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, Lusanda now owns M-Scent Perfumes, where she sells affordable fragrances for men and women. She has also expanded her business to include personal shopping services, gym wear, and hair and skincare products.
Living with epilepsy has presented challenges, but she refuses to let it define her. “I have epilepsy. Sometimes it can be challenging, but it has made me stronger, taught me to never give up and motivated me to work hard and keep growing my business,” she says.
Like many entrepreneurs, she finds that access to capital remains one of her biggest hurdles. “One of my biggest challenges is not always having enough money to grow my business. I keep working hard, promoting my products and believing in myself. I never give up.”
Meje says Engen’s 18-month New Venture Creation Learnership equipped her with practical business skills and the confidence to turn her dream into reality. “It has helped me understand how to manage and grow my business and has given me more confidence.”
The programme, which ran from September 2024 to February 2026, equipped young people living with disabilities with practical business skills, including business planning, finance, marketing and customer service. Participants completed NQF Level 2 and NQF Level 4 qualifications and each received a laptop and digital skills training to help launch their businesses.
Looking ahead
Today, Meje dreams of growing M-Scent Perfumes into a thriving business while creating a secure future for her family. Her message to other women is simple: “Believe in yourself. Keep working hard, stay strong and never give up on your dreams.”

Meje’s journey is a wonderful example of what is possible.”
