These vegetables come from the community garden in UItsig.

More than 500 people benefitted from the harvest from a community in Uitsig, but the person in charge believe they can do more.

Pastor Adam Alexander says the initiative was started to create a space where children can learn the skills to grow their own food.

“We work together with the Ravensmead Able group to create a space that allows our children to learn the skills of growing their own food while also helping to create a more vibrant and healthier neighbourhood. We hope that with this garden we can create a community that can feed itself. There is so many people in this community that go hungry and if we can grow this garden further can we make sure that everyone eats,” says Alexander.

The harvest

According to Alexander they harvested carrots, cabbage and potatoes in December.

“With had our first in December and we managed to feed more than 500 people. I want us to expand this garden so that we can feed more people. If we can teach 100 young people to plant their own food, it will be 100 families that will have the means to feed themselves,” says Alexander.

To expand the project Alexander says they need help.

“We are seeking assistance from the public to make this a reality. We are seeking volunteers to help with the design and development of the garden, and donations for materials, tools, seeds and plants. Everyone in the neighbourhood stands to benefit from the introduction of this garden,” he says.
