Businesses and non-profits have opened their hearts and their pockets to help disaster-ravaged families in Mitchells Plain.

Hands and Feet 7de Laan, based in the Strandfontein informal settlement, will help several families with roof repairs.

Ward councillor Elton Jansen thanked the non-profit company on his WhatsApp channel for their generosity on Tuesday May 12.

“I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hands and Feet for assisting with roof repair materials for the five families who were affected by the fire experienced in 7de Laan Informal Settlement, Strandfontein,” he said. “Hands and Feet assisted five families with high-risk babies under six months old. The five structures will be rebuilt this week,” he said, adding that 30 other families were also assisted by Hands and Feet but he did not reveal in what capacity.

Sandbags donated

Meanwhile, in Rocklands, Ward 81 councillor Ashley Potts thanked a local business, Park Avenue Hardware, for donating sandbags to families affected by the severe storm.

Potts said the father-and-son owners gave two bakkie loads of sandbags for the storm relief efforts.

The Community Chest of the Western Cape has also asked the public and businesses to step up and support families hit hard by severe storms across the province.

Heavy storms have caused widespread damage in several areas of the province, leaving behind flooded roads, blocked drains, power outages and fallen trees.

What is needed

The organisation is collecting donations of food, blankets, clothing, toiletries and other basic essentials. These can be dropped off at Community Chest of the Western Cape, 82 Bree Street, Cape Town.

“The scale of the disaster requires a united response. Every donation will help provide critical support to affected families,” said Peter Heeger, CEO.

Cash donations can be made directly into the organisation’s bank account.
