A woman had to be extricated from her vehicle, in which she was trapped, after being in a collision early on Thursday morning 7 May close to the Tygerberg Hospital entrance in Francie van Zijl Drive, Parow, emergency services said.

News of the incident was shared widely on social-media platforms. In one video showing the two vehicles involved one is on its side and the front part of the other car has sustained extensive damage.

Personnel of the Western Cape Government’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement and Fire and Rescue Services were on the scene.

Jermaine Carelse, Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, said a call came through at 07:20 of a motor-vehicle accident at the entrance to the hospital. He said the Goodwood fire crew responded and found two vehicles involved in a collision. Metro ambulance and a response vehicle were already on the scene.

“An adult female was seriously injured and trapped inside one of the vehicles,” Carelse said. “At 07:55 she was extricated and transported by ambulance to Bellville Melomed Hospital.”

Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson for Tygerberg Hospital, said the accident occurred outside the hospital premises. According to eye witnesses faulty traffic lights were the cause of the collision, and “were green for both sides.”

The people involved were not hospital staff, Pienaar said.
