The community of Bonteheuwel in Cape Town expressed frustration that the culpable homicide court case of the late Lyle Thomas (20), a LEAP Law Enforcement Officer killed in December last year, had been postponed again.

Thomas was knocked down and killed in early December 2025, while assisting fellow motorists at the scene of an accident in Jakes Gerwel Drive. He was off duty at the time. The alleged driver of the vehicle that struck him, a man in his late 30s, was arrested shortly afterwards and granted bail.
Beloved
Angus McKenzie, local ward councillor, joined Thomas’ family at court. “Thomas was a beloved resident of Bonteheuwel and a dedicated City of Cape Town LEAP officer,” he pointed out. “The accused in this heinous crime was present in court today. His bail has been extended and he has been warned to appear again when the matter resumes on 24 June, following a postponement to allow for further investigation. The postponement comes as the state is still awaiting the post-mortem results, nearly six months after Lyle’s passing. While the defence agreed to the postponement, the presiding magistrate clearly expressed frustration that this process was taking so long. Quite rightly so because justice delayed ,is justice denied.”

McKenzie appealed to the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure that all outstanding processes are expedited so that this matter can proceed without further unnecessary delay. “The Thomas family deserves justice, and they deserve closure. The pain this family continues to endure is immense. Thomas’ child is expected to be born in the coming weeks, making this time even more emotional and difficult. Having to face postponement after postponement only deepens the trauma they are experiencing.”
