Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater claimed seven awards, including Best Production, at the 61st Cape Town Theatre Awards, held at the Baxter Theatre on Sunday 5 July, the most decorated production of the evening and a testament to the exceptional creativity and storytelling emerging from the South African stage.

The prestigious awards, formerly known as the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, have celebrated excellence in the performing arts for more than six decades. The transition to the Cape Town Theatre Awards marks an exciting new chapter while preserving a proud legacy of recognising artistic achievement, said Benedicta van Minnen, DA provincial spokesperson on Cultural Affairs and Sport, in a statement this week.

Productions honoured

Alongside Isidlamlilo/The Fire Eater, recognition was extended to Cats, Chicago, Bluebeard’s Castle and Speelgoed van Glas/The Glass Menagerie for their contributions to the performing arts.

Lifetime achievement and innovation

Veteran theatre practitioner Nigel Vermaas received the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his remarkable contribution to theatre, broadcasting and the arts over many decades, a legacy that continues to inspire generations of performers and creatives.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa received the Innovation in Theatre Award for making Shakespeare accessible and relevant to young people from diverse backgrounds, playing an important role in nurturing the next generation of artists, storytellers and creative leaders.

The Western Cape’s creative economy

“We congratulate every nominee, winner, production team and organisation whose dedication and passion continue to make the Western Cape a beacon of artistic excellence,” Van Minnen said. “We wish them continued success as they inspire audiences and contribute to the rich cultural heritage of our province.”

She added that the Western Cape has long been recognised as South Africa’s cultural hub, with a thriving creative economy that contributes significantly to tourism, job creation and economic growth. “Our theatre industry not only entertains audiences but also preserves our diverse stories, promotes social cohesion and provides opportunities for thousands of artists, technicians, producers and entrepreneurs.”
