Roadworks on Brackenfell Boulevard, which have ground to a halt two weeks ago, are set to resume “shortly”, although it is unclear exactly when.

The site, which appears to have been abandoned mid-project, while the traffic-disputing setup remained firmly in place, left residents to deal with continued delays and holdups with no clear explanation for the standstill.

Some two weeks ago, the Bracken Heights Community Forum was told that the roadworks should resume within the next week as the construction company is waiting for the renewal of work permits from the Department of Labour. But another week has passed without any activity.

When pressed for details, the only information forthcoming was a single line from Wesley Vorsatz, chief town and regional planner at the Western Cape Education Department. “The roadworks construction on Brackenfell Boulevard will resume shortly.”

To resume ‘shortly’ says province

When TygerBurger enquired with the City, it curiously distanced itself from the project, pointing out that it is not a City project but a Western Cape Government project. With no firm timeline and only vague assurances that work will resume, residents are left navigating the same traffic snarls with no indication of when the roadworks will be completed.

The roadworks commenced along sections of Brackenfell Boulevard, Stanley Road and Saul Street in Brackenfell in late August, and were scheduled for completion on Friday 18 September, weather permitting and subject to any unforeseen delays.

The upgrades, according to a press release issued by the City of Cape Town, will improve traffic flow and road capacity, enhance safety at the Stanley Road and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection, provide safer pedestrian facilities along Saul Street and improve stormwater drainage.

“These upgrades will deliver important improvements for motorists, pedestrians and the broader Brackenfell community. The widening of Brackenfell Boulevard will increase road capacity and improve traffic flow, while the new traffic circle at the Stanley Road and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection will improve safety by reducing conflict points at this existing three-way intersection,” said the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas in August.
