The Bishop Lavis Cricket Club recently held its annual awards ceremony where they celebrated a season of mixed fortunes.
The club had a much improved season where, at one stage, it even found itself competing for promotion.
Positives
Joseph Fondling, club chairperson, was very pleased with the club’s performances this season, and said that there were a lot of positives that the teams can take into the new season.
“We have shown remarkable improvement on and off the field and we have a chance to revisit our approach to the game as well as to see in which areas we can improve. I am looking forward to the new season, but for now I want to players and executive to rest well and come back fresh for the new season.” Fondling said.
Local ward councillor Charles Esau was the keynote speaker at the event, where he reiterated the importance of communities, particularly youth participation in sport.
Encourage sports
“I’m proud of the positive role Lavis cricket plays in the Bishop Lavis and surrounding communities, and we must be encouraged to use sport as a vehicle to unite us and also help us fight the scourge of gangsterism and crime.” Esau said.
At the ceremony Bevan Abrahams was named Player of the Year and received a Meritorious Awards. Other players that received recognition were Ettiene Davids (Most Dedicated Player), Tony Bagley (best bowler in the second team), Vaughn Koeberg (Sportsman of the Year), Saquile Phillips (Most Improved Player) and Cheslyn Roberts (Impact player of the Year Award).
