Grade 7 learners at Kalkfontein Primary School got dressed
up to the nines for their prom on Thursday 25 October to celebrate the end of
their primary school careers at the Sarepta Civic Centre.

The event has been marked as a historic moment for the
school, as this was the very first time in the 12 years since opening its doors
that the school hosted a farewell for its senior learners.

TygerBurger popped in on the day of the prom to see how the
learners were celebrating their last few weeks of being primary school
learners, and was greeted by the class of 2018 mingling excitedly.

Assistant teacher and organiser of the event, Shane
Cornelius, said the event serves as a culmination of months of hard work and
planning. “It has been my dream for a long time to host something of this
nature for the school,” said Cornelius. “I am most looking forward to seeing
the learners enjoy their time, and of course I love their facial expressions
when they enter the hall.” Cornelius said he hoped the evening would serve as
some sort of encouragement for the learners as they move forward to high
school. “I hope this will encourage them to work hard to eventually attain
matric,” he said. The night, dubbed “A Night in Hollywood”, saw each learner
being assigned to tables bearing the names of today’s biggest celebrity
sensations, namely Beyoncé, Cardi B and Rihanna.

Head boy of the school, Amissi Mzaliwa, said he would enjoy
being able to hang out with his friends and listen to cool music. “I want this
to be a night I will never forget and after which I can say, ‘I had the best
time’,” he said.

Deputy principal of Kalkfontein Primary School, Theodore van
Wyk, said the evening marks an opportunity for each learner to simply be
themselves. “We want them to realise how precious they are and how much
potential they each have. We hope they make the best of all their opportunities
going forward. Our hope is also that they live their lives to the fullest
beyond tonight,” said Van Wyk.

Principal Allan van Niekerk said the event was “history in
the making”.

“This group is really special. This year has been the first
year in which we’ve had such few discipline problems,” he said.

Van Niekerk further said the staff strive to make the school
a safe haven for its learners. “We are striving to provide them with quality
education, and to make the school a safe and comfortable space,” he said. “They
have all these opportunities we as the older generation never had. The sky is
the limit for them.” Furthermore, he thanked the staff for their efforts
throughout the year.

“I must thank the teachers who so diligently supported the
learners throughout the year.”
