The Hawks are seeking the help of the public in locating two suspects involved in the sudden surge in bank robberies that have taken place since November last year.
According to the Hawks’ spokesperson Zinzi Hani, the eight robberies took place in Bellville (two separate robberies), Elsies River (two), Lingelethu West, Kuils River, Kleinvlei and Gugulethu.
Both Standard Bank and Absa branches have been targeted.
“The Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) team is investigating these matters. The one suspect is described as tall whilst the other one is short. Both are males.”
One incident happened on 5 November at the Standard Bank at Tyger Manor in Durban Road when two men entered the shop and fled with R48 000.
The other one in Bellville happened on 4 March at 15:00 when a man entered the Absa Bank in Voortrekker Road with a note. On it was written “this is part of a robbery”. He showed the teller a firearm and threatened to shoot someone if she didn’t hand over money.
He fled with R3 000.
The Hawks are putting some of their best officers on the case, with the investigating officer in the matter, Capt Petro Coetzee, being instrumental in the case of Zephany Nurse who was abducted as baby and reunited with her parents 17 years later.
Anyone with information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts can contact Coetzee on 071 481 6932.
