Ex-Protea and learner raise funds for children at Tygerberg Hospital

Tahirah Naicker, a University of Cape Town (UCT) online high school learner, and Vernon Philander, an allrounder, competed on the Sanlam Moola-Money gameshow recently to raise money for the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust.

A former Protea cricketer and a high school student recently managed to raise a large sum of money in aid of the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust.

Vernon Philander, an allrounder, and University of Cape Town (UCT) online high school learner Tahirah Naicker recently competed on the Sanlam Moola-Money gameshow on television where the pair managed to raise R50 000 for the children’s trust – a charity chosen by Vernon. The cricketer is also a Tutu Tyger ambassador for the children’s trust.

Asked about her experience on the gameshow, Tahirah responded: “I am so grateful to have been on the show and learn about financial literacy in a fun and exciting way. It was such a surreal experience to have been able to help raise funds for charity, meet celebs, and of course, be on television.”

Tahirah and Vernon went up against Miss SA, Lalela Mswane, and a fellow UCT high school learner.

Vernon was paired with Tahirah after she won against other Sanlam UCT Online High School Scholarship Programme recipients to appear on the show.

“I was super excited to be partnered with Vernon. He was really fun, supportive, down to earth and an all-round amazing teammate.”

The trickiest part of the competition was having to think on your feet and hit the buzzer with lightning speed before your opponent, but once our team started gaining momentum I felt super confident that we were going to get that moola, Tahirah explains. Asked about how she feels raising so much money, she answered: “I am incredibly honoured and humbled to have had the opportunity to help raise R50 000 for the trust and raise awareness for that cause.”

Tahirah and Vernon appeared on the première of Season 2 of Sanlam Moola-Money on Sunday 10 July.
