More than 500 units of the street drug khat was discovered in a panel van on the N1 highway in Kraaifontein on Sunday 11 February.
According to Western Cape Mobility Minister Ricardo Mackenzie provincial traffic officers were conducting vehicle checks on the highway when they were stopped the vehicle, which was travelling in the direction of Cape Town.
“On inspection, the driver became visibly nervous, which prompted a further search of the vehicle and detection of the contraband,” he said. “The driver was arrested for possession of an illegal substance and taken to the Kraaifontein Police Station for further investigation.”
Mackenzie added this success illustrated the dedication of provincial traffic officers in helping reduce illegal substances on the streets of the Western Cape.
“The successes of these traffic officers are well deserved, as they work tirelessly to keep our roads and communities safe,” he said.
