A state-of-the-art machine worth thousands of rand was recently handed over to the Neonatology Department at Tygerberg Hospital, marking a significant step forward in enhancing specialised care for the hospital’s most vulnerable patients.

The official handover of the Olympic Brainz Monitor, worth R709 969, was conducted by Prof Pierre Goussard on behalf of the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust and formally received by Prof Gugu Kali, head of Neonatology. Also present at the event were Dr Matodzi Mukosi, Chief Executive of Tygerberg Hospital, and Dr Sheila Lubega, Medical Manager of Paediatrics.

The Olympic Brainz Monitor is an advanced neurological monitoring device used to assess brain activity in newborns, particularly those at risk of neurological complications. Its introduction into the Neonatal Unit will enable earlier detection of abnormalities, more accurate diagnosis and improved clinical decision-making, ultimately contributing to better outcomes for critically ill and premature infants, said Louise Theron, chief executive of the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust.

Grateful

Speaking at the handover, Goussard highlighted the trust’s ongoing commitment to supporting excellence in paediatric and neonatal health care. “This donation reflects our dedication to ensuring that clinicians have access to the best possible equipment to care for newborns in need. We are grateful to all our donors and partners who make contributions like this possible.”

Kali expressed sincere appreciation for the donation, noting its impact on patient care. “This monitor will greatly enhance our ability to provide specialised neurological care to neonates, especially those with brain injury. Early and accurate monitoring is critical, and this equipment will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the babies entrusted to our care.”

The Children’s Trust continues to play a pivotal role in advancing paediatric health care at Tygerberg Hospital by funding essential equipment, infrastructure improvements and patient-centred initiatives, said Theron.

The trust was established in 2001 and is dedicated to improving paediatric and neonatal health care at Tygerberg Hospital by addressing critical needs and supporting medical excellence through donor-funded initiatives.
