Messages of condolences have been streaming in following the passing of a well-known Cape Town radio sports presenter, Lorenzo Darries.

Darries passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning 5 May.

Darries was a familiar voice on Cape Town’s commercial radio station Good Hope FM who extended their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and listeners.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and friend, Lorenzo Darries, following a courageous battle with heart disease.

“A beloved voice on Good Hope FM, Lorenzo brought warmth, passion, and authenticity to every moment on air and beyond. His strength, resilience, and spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

“His legacy will live on in all of us,” the station said.

On Tuesday 31 March Darries shared news that he is stepping away from his role as presenter.

“Bitter-sweet moment, this will be my final broadcast as sports presenter on the Great Drive Show. I’ll be heading into a producer role and still stand in when needed but will miss the feeling of being on air every day. My health comes first and I need to be stronger, mentally and physically to do what I love. Cheers for now fam,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Darries was also a familiar face on the Expresso Morning Show on SABC3.

“We will miss his sport updates, his warm 6 a.m. koesisters which he’d bring for the crew (all out of the kindness of his heart), but most of all we will miss his spirit. Lorenzo was a true fighter, and his fight is now over. Our thoughts and prayers to his family and all who loved him.”

Guy McDonald, radio host on Smile FM and friend, also shared his thoughts.

“It was a privilege to know and work with a man so passionate about sport and so desperate to live a full live. May his memory forever inspire his wife, family and closest friends.”

Sibelius High School in Retreat where he attended school, also shared their sincere condolences to his family and friends.

“Lorenzo was a kindhearted individual whose generosity extended well beyond his matriculation. His regular donations of stationery to our learners reflected his enduring commitment to the school.

“He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.”

Darries leaves behind his wife, Kelly Williams.
