Subcouncil 17 has thrown its weight behind a proposal to build Mitchells Plain’s first indoor swimming pool.

The motion, put forward by Lentegeur ward councillor Gouwa Timm and backed by Westridge Ward councillor Ashley Potts, highlights that the area has no indoor swimming facilities despite having three community-based pools at Westridge, Lentegeur and Eastridge and the coastal public pool Mnandi.

Need for recreational facilities

“Mitchells Plain is a densely populated community in the Cape Flats with limited access to recreational facilities,” Timm told the meeting on Monday 21 April.

She said an indoor pool would allow for recreational activities to continue in the colder seasons too, when the other public pools close.

The proposal calls for the current Lentegeur swimming pool to be expanded to include an indoor facility, which would provide year-round access to swimming and “promote health, wellness and community engagement”.

Significance

Timm noted that Mitchells Plain will celebrate 50 years of existence this year, making the timing significant for such a development.

The motion asks for the indoor pool project to be included in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) with funding allocated accordingly.

“This motion aims to bring attention to the need for improved recreation facilities within Mitchells Plain,” Timm said.

Motion supported

The subcouncil unanimously supported the motion, which will now be forwarded for consideration in the City’s planning processes.

Subcouncil chair Elton Jansen said that while he supported the motion, councillors needed to be aware that if approved the pool may not be in Lentegeur specifically, pending feasibility studies.
