The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) says construction of the new R105 million Ravensmead Community Day Centre (CDC) has been completed – three months ahead of schedule.

The department says it remains committed to fast-tracking infrastructure delivery to support service delivery.

Focus

Provincial minister of infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, said the project reflects government’s focus on governance and service delivery. “This partnership between government, the community, industry partners and professional teams is united by a common purpose – to deliver safe, dignified and accessible public infrastructure,” he said.

According to Simmers, the community-focused project created 236 local job opportunities and injected R36,1 million into the local economy through subcontractors, suppliers and labour. He said the single-storey facility features a durable exterior and light-filled courtyards, with a flexible layout that allows consulting rooms to be adapted as community healthcare needs change.

Primary healthcare

The CDC will offer a range of primary healthcare services, including acute care, maternal and child health, oral health, radiography, rehabilitation, chronic disease management and a pharmacy. Simmers added that the design incorporates energy-efficient and climate-responsive features, including natural lighting, shaded windows, LED lighting and rainwater harvesting.

The DOI also thanked the contractor, professional service providers and its health infrastructure team for their role in completing the project ahead of schedule.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness will announce the official opening date. Provincial minister of health and wellness, Mireille Wenger, said teams are currently equipping the facility. “While the building is complete, we are ensuring that when it opens, residents are welcomed into a space that supports their health and care needs,” she said.
