In a heartwarming show of community spirit, Circle of Life Educare in Durbanville brought together local organisations for a special educational and charity-driven event held in celebration of National Pet Day recently.

For years, the preschool has proudly partnered with The Lucky Lucy Foundation, who play a vital role in rescuing and caring for animals in need. The Lucky Lucy Foundation provides shelter, food and medical care to abandoned and neglected animals.

“Circle of Life Educare supports their mission through donations and awareness initiatives,” says Schonette Goosen, principal of the preschool.

Pet food collection drive

This year was no different. The preschool ran a pet food collection drive to support the animals that are in the care of The Lucky Lucy Foundation. The event was both educational and exciting for the children. They took part in a day focused on pet care, safety and kindness towards animals,” she says.

Adding to the excitement, Pets4Life Academy – known for its one-on-one dog training, training academy, retail store and parlour – hosted a live pet training demonstration. This gave the children a firsthand look at how animals are trained and cared for. This interactive session taught the children how improving your dog’s behaviour builds confidence and strengthens the bond between the dog and its owner. Respect, discipline and understanding between pets and their owners is essential for responsible pet ownership,” Goosen says.

Showcased sniffer dogs

Another highlight for the day, was when SJC Security showcased their sniffer dogs – demonstrating their unique abilities and showing the children how trained dogs assist in important real-life situations using their sense of smell. This demonstration gave the children a fascinating look at how dogs can serve and protect communities. This sparked curiosity and appreciation for working animals – animals beyond the home environment that we are used to seeing them in,” she says.

Circle of Life Educare uses national and internationally recognised days as meaningful learning opportunities. Through events like these, the preschool teaches our children about community involvement, responsibility, health, safety and compassion in a fun and engaging way.

“This collaborative event not only enriches young minds, but also shines a spotlight on the incredible work being done by local organisations. It stands as a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference,” Goosen says.
