On Saturday Bishop Lavis Cricket Club’s spinner, Shaquille Phillips, made his bowling do the talking when he took a five-wicket haul against Somerset West Cricket Club.
Somerset West won the toss and sent Lavis in to bat on a wicket that looked unpredictable after some overnight rain. Its team did not get off to a good start and lost their first wicket with the score on 19 when Bevan Abrahams (11) was bowled by Kobus Reyneke. With wickets falling at regular intervals it was Neo Petersen (29) and Cheslyn Roberts (27) who steadied the Lavis ship. A quick cameo of 24 runs by Jason Arendse helped Lavis to 159 all out.
Moderate
Somerset got their batting innings off with a moderate opening partnership of 24 when Larry Morkel was trapped leg before wicket by Neo Petersen. After the lunch break Loyd Simpson (47) and Wilhelm Esterhuizen (22) kept the scoreboard ticking over and their partnership looked threatening for the host team. With the introduction of Phillips to the bowling attack the visitors soon found themselves in trouble as the Lavis spinning magician took wickets at regular intervals and eventually ended with bowling figures of 5/35 in his allotted 10 overs.
Somerset West ended their innings on 143 runs giving Lavis victory by 16 runs.
