The City of Cape Town has commenced significant roadworks in two suburbs, with resurfacing projects set to improve key routes in Plattekloof and Bothasig over the coming month.
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate will working in Plattekloof Road, southbound between Baronetcy Boulevard and Uys Krige Drive, as well as Vryburger Avenue, southbound between De Grendel Avenue and Bosmansdam Road in Bothasig. The project is scheduled to run from now until Monday 23 March.
To reduce inconvenience during peak hours the work will take place at night between 19:00 and 05:30, Monday to Friday. All lanes are scheduled to reopen to traffic by 06:00 on weekdays, unless unforeseen circumstances arise.
Comprehensive maintenance programme
The roadworks form part of regular maintenance designed to extend the life span of the city’s road network. Beyond resurfacing, the project will include removing damaged kerbs and installing new ones as well as replacing selected damaged channels and realigning them where necessary.
Rob Quintas, Mayco member for Urban Mobility, acknowledged the temporary inconvenience residents would face. “Residents and business owners in the Plattekloof and Bothasig area can expect some noise while works are underway over the next few weeks. Our teams will do their best to complete the road resurfacing as efficiently as possible.”
Weather window drives urgent timeline
Quintas emphasised the importance of completing the work during favourable weather conditions.
“The City’s Road Infrastructure Management teams will work hard to get to as much of this important road-maintenance work while the weather conditions remain favourable. We ask that the public remain patient while these projects are underway as we have a limited period of time during the year where we can push to complete as much of this work as possible.”
Due to expected congestion during construction hours motorists are advised to consider alternative routes between 19:00 and 05:30. Residents can look forward to newly resurfaced sections of both Plattekloof Road and Vryburger Avenue on completion of the project.
