The four new neighbourhood watch sectors established in Goodwood recently by the local community policing forum (CPF) in partnership with the police has seen several success stories to date. One of them was helping a young man gain access to a shelter, and a rehabilitation programme.
The four neighbourhood watch organisations are Townsend Estate (sector 1), Goodwood Estate (sector 2), Vasco Estate (sector 3) and Richmond Estate (sector 4).
Sally Venter, chair of the Goodwood Estate Neighbourhood Watch, said these neighbourhood watch organisations have been working tirelessly to combat crime, support the police, and contribute to creating a safer and more caring environment for their community.
“The newly established neighbourhood watch sectors have played an active role in assisting law enforcement by helping to remove criminals from the area, cleaning up our streets, and, importantly, offering assistance and support to vulnerable individuals, including vagrants. We are pleased to report several positive outcomes, including successfully placing individuals in shelters and continuing to work closely with the police to assist others who have requested help.
“During one of our patrols, our members encountered a 26-year-old young man living on the streets of Goodwood who was in urgent need of assistance to enter a rehabilitation programme. Through swift teamwork, we were able to contact his family and secure placement for him at a rehabilitation centre within a short space of time.”
Venter said they extend their sincere appreciation to The Choice Drug Counselling Services for their generosity in offering a discounted rate for his stay.
“We are proud to share that he is currently enrolled in the programme and is doing very well. Our neighbourhood watch members continue to support him by conducting weekly visits and providing essential items to encourage and support his recovery journey.”
Venter said the four neighbourhood watch organisations remain committed to working closely with the police, the Goodwood CPF, and other key stakeholders to enhance safety in their area and to assist as many vulnerable individuals as possible.
“We encourage community members who wish to get involved, either by joining patrols or contributing through cash donations, to please make contact with us. Your support plays a vital role in helping us make Goodwood a safer and better place for our community and our children,” Venter said.
