Four men were arrested yesterday (7 January) on charges of murder and being in possession of a hijacked vehicle at a filling station in Okavango Road, Brackenfell.

According to a police statement, members of the Flying Squad received a call at around 23:20 from a vehicle tracking company. A hijacked Toyota Corolla was reportedly driving around the Brackenfell area.

The Flying Squad found four men, aged between 18 and 22, in the car at the filling station. They claimed that it belonged to a friend of theirs. All four men were arrested, and a murder charge was added when it was discovered that the car’s driver had been murdered.

The suspects are due to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and being in possession of a hijacked vehicle.

Second hijacking incident

Earlier yesterday, police in Gugulethu were alerted that the driver of a Quantum minibus had been hijacked and kidnapped in Langa at 10:30.

Police spotted the minibus after keeping a close watch on the Europe informal settlement. When the suspects realised that they had been found, they jumped out of the vehicle and fled. The driver was found unharmed in the back of the vehicle, which had minor damage to the dashboard. The radio and tracking device had been removed.
