The family of a young multi-talented girl from Blue Downs is thankful she has been picked for the South African Rugby Elite Player (EPD) Development squad, whose training begins on 29 November at the Delsma Sports Farm in Riebeek Kasteel.
Tamryn Booysen (17), a champion sprinter who plays wing, tried her hand at rugby last year and took to the sport immediately, making it look as if she was born to do it and winning award after award. Her rise was so meteoric she was chosen to play for Western Province after just a couple of months.
Father
Paul Booysen, her father, said he didn’t know where her talent for rugby stemmed from. “We are just very proud parents and give all glory to God. We cannot wait to see what is in her future and we pray that the Lord will protect and guide her on this journey.”
Tamryn, or “Tammy” as she is known, said she was grateful for the opportunity. “I want to thank God for opening this door for me. I look forward to camp and want to learn more about rugby and the culture in a national set up. Athletics is still my first love, but I want to see how far I can take it in rugby.”
Busy year ahead
The new year is going to be busy for her because she will be tackling her matric year at Tygerberg High School. “I am going to be very busy, but my schoolwork is the most important. I will fit my sport in. For now I am excited for the the opportunity I received.”
The EPD squad, consisting of players from all over the country, will be put through their paces until 6 December.
