Hide valuables during peak traffic, police urge

Lentegeur police have urged motorists to keep their valuables hidden during peak traffic in the mornings and evenings.

“Handbags, laptops and cellphones must be put out of sight or in the boot,” said Lentegeur Police Station spokesperson Const Navon van Houten.

He said this was especially important in areas where there are roadworks.

“Motorists must be aware of the roadworks that are taking place, and potholes. Drivers tend to slow down and are therefore prone to smash and grabs,” he said.

Peak traffic hours on Jakes Gerwel Drive have also become a “major problem” with smash-and-grabs, he said, encouraging motorists to be extra vigilant between 05:00 and 07:00 and 17:00 and 20:00.

“Motorists have been encouraged to not sit with their cellphones when driving, especially on Jakes Gerwel,” he said.

He added: “Do not take Samora Machel Drive as a short cut.”

He encouraged motorists to report all incidents to their nearest police station.
