ALICE – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of two University of Fort Hare students, aged 19 and 23, on charges of public violence.
The arrests followed an incident on Friday, 14 August, during which the suspects allegedly threw objects at moving vehicles and attempted to set a police vehicle alight.
Both students are expected to appear in the Alice Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 August.
The SAPS has reiterated that public violence and the destruction of property will not be tolerated. Police have warned the student body that should further incidents occur, officers may exercise their powers under Section 48 of the Criminal Procedure Act, which permits police to enter campus premises to effect arrests.
At least six motorists have reported damage to their vehicles following the incident. Cases of malicious damage to property have been opened and remain under investigation.
The SAPS said it remains committed to maintaining law and order and urged students to refrain from unlawful conduct. Students with grievances have been encouraged to raise them through appropriate and peaceful channels.
