KARIEGA – A devastating tragedy struck a family in Kariega yesterday morning when two young cousins lost their lives in a swimming pool drowning incident, despite heroic rescue efforts by their 12-year-old cousin.
The victims have been identified as Cairo-Asher Sauls, aged 3, and Shyloh Sauls, aged 2.
According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, police responded to an emergency call at approximately 11:00 following reports of a drowning incident in Len Basson Street, Kariega.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they discovered that the two toddlers had already been pulled from the pool by their 12-year-old cousin, who had attempted to rescue them. Despite these brave rescue efforts, both children died.
Police have opened an inquest into the incident to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the drowning. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to this tragedy.
