CAPE TOWN – Two men were killed and five others wounded in two separate shootings in Mitchells Plain yesterday.

Police were called to Towerkop Street, Tafelsig, in the early hours of Sunday 24 May where they found four men who had been shot, said police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg.

Two of them — aged 22 and 25 — were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The two others, both aged 25, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Twigg said Mitchells Plain police have opened two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated, and no arrests have been made. The attack is believed to have been gang-related.

Three shot in Eastridge drive-by

Later the evening, at about 21:15, three people were shot in 6th Avenue, Eastridge.

Crimewatch groups claim that a mother, daughter and friend were shot and that the mother was killed in the incident but according to Twigg, who could not confirm their relationships, no one was killed.

He said, two women, aged 20 and 36, and a 23-year-old man were standing in the road when a white vehicle drove past and someone inside opened fire on them.

All three were taken to hospital for treatment. Police have opened three counts of attempted murder. The motive for the attack has not yet been established. The suspects fled the scene and have not been arrested, he said.
