Two arrested, stolen firearm recovered in Free State


SENEKAL – The Senekal Detective Service has arrested two suspects from Matwabeng near Senekal after they were found in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

On 11 December at about 20:00, a detective was conducting a preliminary investigation into the theft of a 7.65mm pistol stolen from a house in Senekal. The investigation led police to the first suspect, aged 19, who was arrested after a search conducted at his residence revealed the stolen firearm in his possession.

His arrest subsequently led to the apprehension of his accomplice, who is believed to have previously worked at the complainant’s house when the firearm was stolen. It is alleged that the two suspects concealed the weapon together.

The lawful owner has been charged with negligent loss of a firearm under the Firearms Control Act.

Both suspects have been charged and are expected to appear before Senekal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 Decembe facing charges of possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

Regional firearms concern

The proliferation of illegal firearms remains a serious concern within the Thabo Mofutsanyana District.

“We urge lawful firearm owners to ensure strict compliance with the Firearms Control Act and always secure their firearm safes. Individuals who possess illegal firearms are warned that the arm of the law will reach them, as we continue to remove illegal firearms from criminal hands,” says Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the Free State Police.
