Trump blasts Norway over Nobel Peace Prize snub

PORT HURON, United States – US President Donald Trump launched a verbal attack on Norway during a campaign rally on Sunday, using vulgar language to describe the Scandinavian nation after its Nobel Committee failed to award him the Peace Prize.

“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shit house country, actually,” Trump told supporters at the Michigan event.

The president said he would ban Norwegian immigrants from entering the United States as punishment for the snub.

“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he declared during the rally in Port Huron, held ahead of crucial US midterm elections on 3 November.

Trump has openly pursued the Nobel Peace Prize since returning to the White House in January 2025. This year’s award went to Navi Pillay, a South African judge and former UN rights chief.

The president called the committee’s decision “disgraceful and embarrassing” and insisted he deserved the honour instead.

Trump said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but made an exception for Norway “because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize.”

The White House has not announced any official policy changes regarding Norwegian immigration.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded on Monday, reminding Trump that the Nobel Committee operates independently from the Norwegian government.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering – and that is still the case,” Eide told national broadcaster NRK.

Trump drew widespread criticism in 2018, during his first term, after using similar crude language to describe Haiti and certain African countries.
