The case against a truck driver involved in a collision which claimed four lives near Cradock has been remanded until Monday, 15 September.

The tragedy occurred shortly after 08:00 on Saturday, 6 September along the N10 motorway, approximately 20 kilometres outside Cradock en route to Colesberg.

A light motor vehicle carrying four occupants collided head-on with a side tipper lorry, sparking a fire which claimed all four lives.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collision occurred when a milk tanker allegedly turned into a farm entrance. To avoid colliding with the rear of the tanker, the side tipper lorry allegedly swerved into the oncoming carriageway, directly into the path of the smaller vehicle.

The car was struck with considerable force, pushed several metres and became trapped beneath the lorry before both vehicles caught fire.

“We witnessed the flames engulf the entire front end of the truck – there was nothing anyone could do. It was absolutely horrifying,” recalled an eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous.

In response to the incident, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape issued a statement linking the tragedy to a growing “freight lorry crisis” in the region. The party highlighted increasing heavy goods vehicle traffic, poor road infrastructure and inadequate enforcement of freight regulations.

“This is not merely a tragic accident; it is symptomatic of a broader road safety crisis,” the DA statement reads. “Lives are being lost due to insufficient control over freight movement in rural areas.” The party urged authorities to implement urgent measures to improve motorway safety.

The victims have been identified as Christelle Swanepoel (41), Michelle Collarossi (30), Jason Burton (22) and Janke Pressley (16), all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Whilst there is presently no publicly available official statement from the families of the four victims, those who knew them have expressed their grief on social media, describing them as “bright lights” within their communities.

The driver of the side tipper lorry has been charged with four counts of culpable homicide and appeared in court for the first time on Monday, 8 September.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape, the case was remanded until Monday, 15 September to allow officials to determine whether the accused has any previous convictions and legal status in South Africa.

These findings will determine whether a formal bail application can proceed.
